Japan vows to continue its whale hunt after Sea Shepherd collision

Japan vows to continue its whale hunt after Sea Shepherd collision

Following Sea Shepherd founder Paul Watson?s declaration that Japan will likely stop hunting for the remainder of the season after a clash between the two sides saw a temporary suspension in refueling, Japan made assurances that it will continue its whale hunt in the Southern Ocean. An official at Japan?s Fisheries Agency told Agence France-Presse, ?We are keeping our whaling program,? and denied that the collision with Sea Shepherd vessels permanently suspended the hunt for this season.

Japan vows to continue its whale hunt after Sea Shepherd collision

The official repeated the government?s position that it was Sea Shepherd that rammed the Japanese whaling ship, Nisshin Maru, yesterday, marking the worst confrontation between the two in the Southern Ocean in three years. Watson, on the other hand, described how their ships were derided by the Japanese fleet as actions comparable to ?a case of road rage.? Meanwhile, Japan?s Institute of Cetacean Research, through a spokesman, said that the ship could not be refueled ?due to Sea Shepherd?s dangerous activities.?

Tony Burke, Australian Environment Minister, describes Japan?s whale hunt as cruel and unnecessary, and yet, the Australian government has remained deaf to calls for a government vessel to monitor the hunt. For its part, Japan says it conducts scientific research, by taking advantage of the loophole in an international ban on whaling agreed at the International Whaling Commission (IWC), but it doesn?t hide that the mammals ultimately end up as food. However, several years ago Sea Shepherd claimed Japan?s whaling fleet hit and sank one of their ships, the Ady Gil, but the accounts of that incident have been repeatedly questioned, with more than a few claims that it was the activists who intentionally hit a Japanese vessel, and then scuttled the remains themselves.

It may be some time before it becomes clear what actually took place between the two sides this week. Two videos have been released that at least cast doubt on Sea Shepherd?s account of what took place, showing their ships intentionally steering into the path of Japan?s vessels. While they are in Japanese, you can still clearly see the video footage that shows the two sides coming dangerously close to each other, with one even filmed from the deck of one of the Japanese ships.

Nevada's Hispanics Come of Age Politically

Hispanic Business:

More than 125 years ago, after the 1874 elections, Pablo Laveaga became the first Hispanic ever elected to the Nevada Legislature, representing Humboldt County.

The next Hispanic legislator in Nevada came 70 years later. The third was not elected until another 38 years had passed.

Recently, however, thanks to changes in the state's demographics and opportunities that have come from tweaks in the state electoral system, Hispanics have been getting elected at a much faster pace.

Canada Safeway burger recall due to E.coli food concerns

safeway burger recall

The Canada Safeway burger recall was initiated after E.coli testing during an ongoing food safety investigation at a meat production facility.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Canada Safeway have warned people against consumption of The Gourmet Meat Shoppe and The Butcher?s Cut?brands of frozen beef burgers?as they may have been contaminated with E.coli O157:H7 bacteria.

The Safeway burger recall includes meat was produced at Cardinal Meat Specialists in Ontario and the five brands have a best before date of Aug. 14, 2013.

These products have been distributed in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia and the Northwest Territories.

Dear Beacon readers. Please help us serve you better by filling out this?brief survey form.?We thank you for your feedback and your commitment to local online news.

Safeway has voluntarily recalled the affected products from its stores in the markets due to the E.coli food concerns.

The CFIA said that the recall is a result of E.coli testing related to an ongoing food safety investigation at a facility which produces the meat. Testing will continue to see if any other products are affected.

Food contaminated with E.coli O157:H7 may not look or smell spoiled.

Consumption of food contaminated with these bacteria may cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses. The symptoms include severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea.

Some people may have seizures or strokes and some may need blood transfusions and kidney dialysis. Others may live with permanent kidney damage. In severe cases of illness, people may die.

Last fall, officials linked an E.coli outbreak to a batch of Butcher?s Choice beef brand burgers sold across Canada.

In Oct. 2012, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) confirmed 11 E.coli illnesses across four provinces, linking them to the massive beef recall associated with products originating from XL Foods? Brooks, Alta. facility.

While one case was reported in British Columbia, seven cases were in Alberta, two in Quebec, and one in Newfoundland and Labrador.

In Sept. 2012, ground beef possibly contaminated with E.coli and sold at a number of grocers throughout Alberta and across Canada was recalled after the CIFA issued an alert asking the public, distributors and food service establishments not to consume, sell, or serve the ground beef products because the products may be contaminated with E.coli O157:H7.

Sony Xperia Z vs Google Nexus 4: spec comparison

Along with form factor, battery life, and operating system, price is one of the biggest considerations for consumers hankering after a new mobile phone. Google's Nexus 4 made waves when it launched back in October 2012, offering a raft of top-notch specifications for a decidedly mid-range outlay. Sony's Xperia Z is a more straightforward high-end proposition, though it too can be considered a relative bargain in view of its impressive new-gen feature set. Which handset ultimately offers the best value? Let's find out.

Size and weight

Sony's Xperia Z is one of the most slender devices on the market, sizing up at just 7.9mm in depth and tipping the scales to the tune of 146g. The Nexus 4 has a larger girth of 9.1mm, but weighs marginally less at 139g. The Google handset is also a tad shorter at 133.9mm (versus the Xperia Z's 139mm).

Display

The Xperia Z features a 5in screen that looks like it's really going to please the retinas, offering a Full HD resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels at a stunning density of 441ppi. The 4.7in Nexus 4 offers a standard HD resolution of 1,280 x 768 pixels at a less impressive 318ppi.

Camera

The Xperia Z looks like it has one of the very best cameras in the high-end smartphone segment, sporting a 13.1-megapixel Sony Exmor RS sensor. This sets it apart from a lot of its rivals which - like the Nexus 4 - feature 8-megapixel primary snappers. The Z's 2.2-megapixel front camera also bests the 1.3-megapixel auxiliary shooter found on the Google device.

Processor and battery

Both the Xperia Z and Nexus 4 feature a Snapdragon S4 SoC, comprised of Krait CPUs clocked at 1.5GHz and an Adreno 320 GPU. Sony's new flagship packs a 2,300 mAh battery with a claimed 3G talk time of up to 11 hours, while the Nexus 4 purports to offer as much as 15 hours of jabbering courtesy of its 2,100 mAh battery.

Software

In the Xperia Z and the Nexus 4, the Android platform has two of its most tempting propositions. Die hard fans of Google's mobile OS will inevitably find themselves leaning towards the search giant's own-branded handset, which shows off Android 4.2 Jelly Bean?and will surely be one of the first in line when Key Lime Pie is served up. The Sony handset ships with Jelly Bean 4.1.

Storage and memory

The Xperia Z and Nexus 4 both feature a hefty 2GB of RAM under the hood. Google's mobile can be had with either 8GB or 16GB of on-board storage, while Sony's latest hero phone comes in a single 16GB model. Media buffs will likely lean towards the Xperia Z, as it comes equipped with a microSD card slot so you can cheaply and easily up the storage.

Connectivity and wireless

The Sony Xperia Z is LTE capable and we fully expect it to feature on EE's UK 4G network, while?the Nexus 4 supports the HSPA+ standard - furnished by most of Britain's major mobile operators. Both devices feature NFC technology.

Extras

Until the Xperia Z arrived, ITProPortal's spec comparisons didn't really need a section for special features, but the water- and dust-resistant Sony flagship changed all that. The Nexus 4 features integrated wireless charging, with the necessary accessory - the wireless charging 'Orb' - finally expected to arrive in the coming weeks.

Price, availability and opinion

Following its European launch at MWC in February, the Sony Xperia Z will hit the UK on 1 March. The device is up for pre-order via Three and pricing has been provisionally set at ?450. It's no great secret that Google has struggled to keep up with Nexus 4 demand so far, but availability appears to be improving and both the 8GB and 16GB models are currently available via the Google Play store for ?239 and ?279, respectively.

With around ?200 separating the Xperia Z and the Nexus 4, there's a fair bit for prospective buyers to mull over. For our money, Google's handset is probably the best value device on the market at the moment - its quad-core chipset, 8-megapixel camera, wireless charging, and 2GB of memory all speak to the high-end segment, yet it won't set you back much more than the Nokia Lumia 620.

Having said that, few devices can hold a candle to the Xperia Z. With a Full HD display, 13-megapixel camera, 4G LTE support, and extra durability, Sony's latest flagship is a true new-gen smartphone that looks like it's worth every penny.?

Of course, it's impossible to say whether high-speed downloads and extra pixels are worth ?200. What's easier to quantify from an investment standpoint is the likelihood that the Nexus 4 will soon be supplanted by a Nexus 5?handset, possibly at Google's 2013 I/O conference in May. The Xperia Z, on the other hand, should still be one of the best devices around in a year's time. That's why we'd lean towards the Sony smartphone in this instance. But with payday once again a long way away, we wouldn't turn our nose up at the Nexus 4, either.

Al's Writing Block: Video Game Review: Call of Duty: Modern ...

"The more things change, the more they stay the same. Boundaries shift, new players step in, but power always finds a place to rest its head." - Lance Henriksen

At the time of this game's release, I was still open to experiencing all manner of gaming, and I was caught up a bit in the hype of things.? I primarily got this game because a few friends of mine were playing on it, so we could all get on and play war with each other.

Then, I watched as a massive onslaught of other military shooters flooded the market.? In the few short years that followed, I watched as Battlefield 3, Call of Duty:? Black Ops, MAG, Homefront, and the third Modern Warfare game filled up the shelves, along with God-knows-what.? I couldn't help but to regard them all and ask myself, come on, how many ways are there to fight a war? I think playing Modern Warfare 2 made me realize that I have a certain ambivalence toward military shooter games; even though they all offer unique stories and experiences, they all kinda run together and look alike.? Meh...

Regardless, Modern Warfare 2 is not a bad game at all, and it's not too hard to see the appeal in playing it, even if it is just another military shooter.? The game is fast, intense, and enthralling.? Playing the campaign, it runs through a gauntlet of challenging levels that allow you to witness the whole world erupting in all-out war from multiple points of view.? Across multiple levels, you get to infiltrate remote enemy bases, run undercover operations, rescue prisoners, save hostages, chase down bad guys, fight against a massive hoard of militia, and ultimately fight off an invasion on American soil.? While vehicle driving is limited in this game, you do have access to a decent arsenal of oodles of guns with oodles of fancy attachments and scopes, and plenty of destructive gadgets and drones and whatnot.? As promised, the game plunges the player into the worst-case scenario of the modern world, and allows you to use 21st century weaponry to experience...modern warfare.

Playing the story mode will be linear and straightforward.? It's what you get if The Hurt Locker, Quantum of Solace, The Rock, Red Dawn, and probably a bunch of Tom Clancy novels were cobbled together.? The story has an interesting narrative that tells the overall story across multiple viewpoints and characters; what the game lacks in emotional resonance, it makes up for with its intriguing politics, a few standout characters, and the sheer scope and ambition of the story.? Chances are that the story will resonate more with those who've played and enjoyed the first MW game (I have not, so some things probably go way over my head).? Despite all its intrigue, I find it a little hard to suspend disbelief at times.

But wait, there's more! You can shoot even more bad guys in Special Ops mode:? a bunch of missions you can play with specific objectives to try and challenge yourself.? It allows you to play either solo, or with friends on co-op mode.

The biggest draw likely will be the multiplayer action, which I partook in for a while.? As I recall, it was quite easy to jump into the action, going through either team-based matches or free-for-alls.? The different maps offered numerous variances in strategy and advantages, while the games themselves were often gripping and unpredictable.? It can be surprisingly addictive to play through the multiplayer, steadily gaining experience points to level yourself up, and trying to longer and longer kill streaks to try and obtain special abilities.

If there's anything to complain about for the overall gameplay, it's that the game can be frustrating as hell.? I must have died a thousand times, usually shot or stabbed because of stupid mistakes or a stupid judgment on my part.? In multiplayer, it's to be expected.? In single-player, I found myself cursing at the AIs for being so relentless and smart.? Chances are that you might thrive on such challenges, but I found it pretty aggravating at times.? Having the entire screen turn red with blood droplets didn't help either, as it often obscured the entire view.? Oh God, the flash-bang grenades are even worse...

Regardless, the game is well-built.? It's not a particularly sharp-looking game, but it is loaded with highly-detailed levels and plenty of impressive texturing and particle effects.? The game moves very fast and smoothly, with practically no drag or performance issues.? I don't even remember ever having a crash with this game.? It utilizes a decent voice cast with quality acting and passable writing.? The game utilizes superb character designs, settings, and weapon selections.? It all looks quite realistic and detailed.? Music is pretty darn cool too.

For a military shooter, MW2 is good and it should be a must-play for fans of these types of games.? My only quibble is, I realized that this isn't my type of game.

4/5 (Entertainment: Frustrating | Story:? Pretty Good | Game:? Good)
