How women can identify heart disease

Women?s heart attack symptoms

Although both men and women may have the same classic heart attack symptoms, including stabbing chest pain, breathlessness and radiating pain down the left arm, women are more likely to experience subtle and vague symptoms.

These include:

? Acute fatigue

? Disturbed sleep

? Shortness of breath

? Cold sweat

? Palpitations

? Anxiety

? Indigestion

? Dizziness

? Jaw pain

? Upper-back pain

or tightness

? Pain in right arm

or both arms

? Chest pain

? Nausea

It started with a vague ache between the shoulder blades. The kind you get after sitting at the computer too long, working out too hard at the gym or doing too many household chores. The kind of discomfort many women know, at least occasionally, and often live with every day.

Even when combined with unexplained fatigue, there was nothing about her subtle achy symptoms to make Julie Bradford think she was about to have a heart attack. Despite her father having had heart disease, she didn?t think she was at risk.

She was an energetic 46-year-old single mother and career woman. Someone who exercised daily, ate a healthy diet and never smoked.

Heart attacks happen to older, overweight, out-of-shape men, right?

Wrong. Almost dead wrong.

Bradford?s symptoms escalated through the day ? sweating, dizziness and aching in the jaw ? until a co-worker called paramedics (despite Bradford?s reluctance), and doctors found that two arteries in her heart were 99 percent blocked. Bypass surgery followed. If treatment had been delayed by only a couple of more hours, she could have died.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in American women, killing one in three. Breast cancer, on the other hand, still the most feared disease by many women, kills one in 30, according to the American Heart Association. In fact, cardiovascular disease claims more women?s lives than the next three causes of death combined ? about 420,000 each year. And, while heart disease most often strikes post-menopausal women, it kills more than 10,000 younger than age 50 annually.

?I was shocked. My (primary care) doctor was shocked. Everyone who knows me was shocked,? said Bradford, of San Diego, who had stents implanted in her arteries to keep them open nearly a year ago. ?I was healthy. I was young. I was fit. I didn?t think I was ever at risk for something like this. I didn?t have any of the typical symptoms.?

That?s part of the problem. Too many people don?t recognize their risks for heart disease, doctors say. And too many women expect to have the classic ?elephant sitting on your chest? pain that men often experience when having a heart attack. With more research finally being done on female heart disease, medical experts are finding that not only are women?s risks and symptoms for cardiovascular disease sometimes different from men?s, so are their treatments and prognoses.

?Over the last 20 years, the mortality rate has decreased for men with heart disease, but not for women. The reason is the atypical presentation of symptoms in women,? said Dr. Sharon Sadeghinia, a cardiologist at Sharp Grossmont Hospital. ?Most women think they?re having a (cardiac episode) only if they have crushing chest pain and feel like passing out, but in real life, that?s a very minor presentation. The severity of the pain does not indicate the severity of heart disease.?

Hooker Barbie

When Daughter was tiny, maybe three, she was madly in love with everything girly. The more lace, glitz and bling the better. She had an entire toy box filled with feather boas of every color, princess dresses and plastic high heels.

Her beloved Barbie dolls lived in the same toy box with their extensive wardrobes. Most were missing at least one body part, since that?s what happens when you beg your older brothers to play Barbie with you.

It was around that time I decided if you can?t beat ?em, join ?em, and I started to collect non-traditional Career Barbies.

There was a period in the 90?s when Mattel attempted to expand its market by introducing several lines of unusual Barbies. There were international Barbies from around the globe. There were Barbies from history and literature, like Cleopatra Barbie and Heidi Barbie. And then there were my favorites ? the Career Barbies.

One by one they lined up on her shelves. Pilot Barbie (long before I ever met a woman commercial pilot), Veterinarian Barbie, Dentist Barbie and Pediatrician Barbie (my fave), Photojournalist Barbie, Professor Barbie, Paleontologist Barbie, Barbie for President, and Firefighter Barbie. I may be forgetting a few, but you get the gist. My pre-schooler needed to know that even Barbie, that iconic man-pleaser, could be anything she wanted to be.

Never mind ?her feet, which were pre-formed to slide into spike heels only, that chick could climb mountains, fly jumbo jets and save lives.

Somehow, at the time, it felt important to neutralize the overt Barbie message with a woman power counter-narrative.

The problem was that Daughter had little or no interest in my Career Barbies. She never even wanted to take them out of the box, which was fine with me since I figured that once out of their perfect, strangled career poses they?d lose heads and arms too, and become just like all the other big-busted, tiny-waisted fashionistas in the toy box.

So there they sat on the shelf; a perfectly frozen gallery of fantasy women?s lives. See, my darling girl? You CAN have it all. Wear your evening gown and strappy pumps to the prom tonight, and join the paratroopers tomorrow.

Who was I kidding?

Fast forward 15 years and I find myself in a different room ? one?full of toys destined to be distributed to children in hospitals and foster homes. My colleagues and I?are sorting through mountains of playthings, deciding what might go to whom ? what?s appropriate, and what?s not (you wouldn?t believe some of the things donated to toy drives).

I am floored. Out of a total 22 Barbies (by far the most represented of any single item), we will discard 11 because they?re too sexually explicit. California Barbie is sporting a bikini so tiny the top barely covers her nonexistent nipples ? the bottom is a thong wedged into the plastic crack between thigh and pelvis. Disco Barbie wears a hot pink and silver halter dress so short she couldn?t sit down without displaying her Brazilian wax, and heels we used to call ?f**k me shoes?.

Not a Career Barbie in sight ? unless you consider hooking a career.

My younger colleagues, all smart women with big professional plans, aren?t too surprised. Once I point out the trend they?re suitably appalled, but it wouldn?t be a big deal otherwise. Their world is so saturated with this sexualized stuff they?ve been desensitized to it.

Woman power has taken on new meaning, at least in the media and mass market. From Jersey Shore?s Snooki to the endless parade of teen idol pop stars, and even our mega-movie stars, our center of power has been hijacked and relocated from our brains to those body parts most likely to benefit from cosmetic surgery and beyond.

When did women?s equality become about using our sexual power over men to its best advantage, instead of using our brain power to participate in all arenas as full partners? The truth is it didn?t, but you sure wouldn?t know it if you?ve been steeped in pop culture.

Sexual power is being confused with actual power, so that embracing cheap sex becomes a 21st century version of feminism. But take my word for it, lustful does not equal liberated.

Take a look at the Forbes Magazine 10 Most Powerful Women of 2012:

1) Angela Merkel (Chancellor, Germany)

2) Hillary Clinton (US Secretary of State)

3) Dilma Rousseff (President, Brazil)

4) Melinda Gates (Co-Chair, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation)

5) Jill Abramson (Executive Editor, NY Times Company)

6) Sonia Ghandi (President, Indian National Congress)

7) Michelle Obama (First Lady, United States)

8) Christine Lagarde (Managing Director, International Monetary Fund)

9) Janet Napolitano (Secretary, US Department of Homeland Security)

10) Sheryl Sandberg (COO, Facebook)

All 10 got where they are by using brainpower, not sexual allure. Even the performers and celebrities later in the list (Oprah Winfrey and Lady Gaga) are brilliant business women who crafted their brand carefully to propel them to the head of the class. They have much more in common with Career Barbie than Disco Barbie.

But try asking your ?tween or teen chica to name 10 women who they think are important and powerful and I?ll bet you get a very different list. Come to think of it, that?s a great conversation starter for us and our daughters. AND for us and our sons.

Remember: the most important influence on our kids? opinions and values isn?t their peers OR pop culture, it?s us. When we open up the conversation and talk about this stuff, they listen (just don?t ask them to admit it).

So tonight at dinner, ask your son or daughter to name a woman they admire, or one they?d like to be like, and take it from there. Try not to prompt or judge (?well how about fill-in-the-blank? Isn?t SHE the one??). Just get the information and start asking why.

Meanwhile, my Career Barbies are packed up in a big plastic bin on a shelf in the garage. They?re still frozen in those perfect poses, original packaging intact. I just know my someday granddaughter is going to love them.

'Power of it was dizzying': first-person accounts

From Florida to New England, residents along the eastern seaboard are sharing their anecdotes, photos and videos of Hurricane-turned-"Superstorm" Sandy. Below are excerpts from the latest dispatches from people living through the storm. All times on posts are ET. Interested in writing about your experiences? Share your story at Yahoo! Contributor Network and your Sandy photos on Flickr.

TUESDAY

5:38 p.m.

'Never seen anything like it'

EAST MEADOW, N.Y.?Heavy winds from Hurricane Sandy resulted in several trees getting knocked down here on Long Island.

East Meadow, located in the heart of Nassau County, was ravaged by strong rainfall, severe winds and storm-like conditions on Tuesday.

At my home in Nassau County, my family and I experienced a major scare when howling winds knocked several branches down late on Monday evening.

On Tuesday, many folks on my block were without power, and left to clean up fallen leaves and branches left in the aftermath of the hurricane.

I have never seen anything like it in my 30 years of living in the New York-metro area.

Discovering my tree-impaled car in Queens

QUEENS?As I walked out of my apartment building today, the streets were covered in debris from last nights storm. I turned the corner to find a huge branch impaling the passenger side of my windshield.

I quickly unlocked the vehicle to check if there was any internal damage. Although there was glass all over the interior, there seemed to be no major damage to it. The branch that fell was about 10 to 15 feet long and allowed some water to flow into the car. Luckily, there seemed to be no major mechanical issues with the vehicle.

After calling my insurance company, I'm now out $1,000 for the cost of the deductible. Due to the high claim activity, I will be forced to wait at least a week for my car to be processed and fixed.

Sandy 'by far the worst' storm in 30 years in Jersey

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP, N.J.?I have been a resident here for the past 30 years. Hurricane Sandy is by far the worst hurricane to hit my town. Strong winds and rain began on Monday in the afternoon. We lost power at 4:36 p.m. The height of the storm came around 8 p.m.

This morning, I drove around the neighborhood to survey the damage. There were fallen trees and power lines everywhere.

We are still without power. All of my neighbors and friends are without power. These images show the damage done by Hurricane Sandy. And this is within just a few blocks.

Weathering 'Superstorm' Sandy in Jersey

DELRAN, N.J.?Many of our neighbors lost power, but we lucked out. We went outside Tuesday and noticed a lot of small and large branches scattered about our front and backyard. A neighbor, just down the street, however, was not so lucky. A very large tree took out the entire side of their house and crushed a car in the driveway. Luckily, the family living in the house was safely rescued and there were no injuries.

Now all we can do is wait, listen to the news and help out wherever we can. We have been told there could be more rain today, so there is still danger of trees falling and flooding not receding.

Park Slope retains power, mostly intact

BROOKLYN?On the morning after Hurricane Sandy made landfall, millions of New Yorkers were still left without power. However, in the area surrounding Prospect Park, this is not the case. Residents, including myself, still have power, and but for a few flickers here and there during the heaviest winds, never lost it. At the same time, the comparative lack of winds and higher elevation as opposed to other parts of Brooklyn have also left Park Slope free from flooding.

Other than a few gusts of wind here and there, the weather in Park Slope is nothing that would prevent myself or any other residents from going about their daily business. With that said, because of the major flooding elsewhere in the city, and especially in a number of subway tunnels, Brooklynites are basically stranded until further notice. A small price to pay for escaping the brunt of the storm mostly intact.

Sandy creeps into northern Ohio, bending trees and whipping winds

MARBLEHEAD, Ohio? This morning, obsessed with going out into what felt like 60 mph winds, I donned a raincoat and rubber boots and went. Making my way around the side of the house situated next to a tall boat barn, I was almost pushed over despite the wind cover. I stiffened my legs against the force, but knew staying out any longer, I'd be down. The power of it was dizzying. Not very sure about whether a tree on our partly wooded lot might timber down on me in the darkness, I was back inside in a flash.

Trees are bent over ready to touch the ground. Overnight, the autumn colors disappeared. Skies outline barren rain-soaked tree branches. With snow season upcoming, normally we would have had an artistic study in black and white. Yet now, the horizon is an imperious miserable grey. A storm like Sandy serves us as a memento of how utterly small we really are in this universe.

? Caralell Gibson

12:30 a.m.

In New Jersey, trees falling and wind howling from Sandy

DENVILLE, N.J.?The tree fell easily. It was a thud. The lights flickered and came back on. It's a shock to think we still have power at this point but we are one of the lucky ones. I'd expect that will change soon.

When the winds blow, it sounds like a freight train. As I write, I read posts from my friends across New Jersey. Trees are down everywhere. Nearly everyone is without power. Each time I hear a strong gust the lights flicker and I hear something else hit the house.

My family and I have a makeshift camp in our basement where we will all sleep this evening. The chance of a tree falling on the house makes it too unsafe to be anywhere else. Only a few blocks away, this tree (pictured above) overturned and gratefully did so across a lawn. It missed the home and cars... more importantly it missed people.

We are now in the heart of the storm as the gusts are expected to keep up until midnight tonight. I fear for what we will see when daylight comes tomorrow

New York streets dangerous with falling debris

BROOKLYN?As the night progresses, it is getting scarier. The wind is coming in through every crevice of the old buildings many of us live in. Massive power outages are beginning to affect the city. Internet is starting to crash as well.

The FDR (a major highway in NYC) is flooded. This is a big outlet to and from the city. Crashes and clangs are being heard from outside. Making many of us wonder what is flying through the streets. Stores are closed. ATMs are malfunctioning.

While stepping out to throw out a smelly bag of trash, a piece of metal scaffolding flew down from more than five stories up and landed within four feet of me. (See picture.)

Winds are more dangerous than they feel right now. This city has much debris, making it seriously dangerous outside.

Sandy uproots tree, smashes Queens garage

QUEENS?Earlier Monday, a huge tree in Queens was knocked over by the powerful winds of Hurricane Sandy. Luckily no people were hurt; the tree just crushed the garage. As I walked by, I snapped pictures of the accident and you can see how it just barely missed the main house on the left.

The Forest Hills Gardens neighborhood in Queens is known for its English-style homes and large trees. However, during storms like this, it's best for the residents to stay indoors, take in their Halloween decorations, and park their cars in the garage. The force of the hurricane winds are so fierce you have to worry about the whole tree and not just the falling branches.

MONDAY

11:49 p.m.

Lulled for 'Superstorm' Sandy by indolent Irene

HOBOKEN, N.J.?As I sit in my darkened apartment, typing with a flashlight, I cannot believe that Sandy seemed inconsequential only 12 hours ago. 48 hours ago, I was enjoying the beginning of a weeklong series of Halloween celebrations for my three young children. Now, I sit with sewage-laden flood waters lapping at my children's bicycles and beloved possessions in the garage while the water inexorably rises through the building stairwell, leaving destruction in its wake.

Hoboken has hurricane fatigue. With two major storms in 14 months and the letdown of evacuating homes that remain pristine during our absences, my neighbors blithely disregarded the storm warnings over the last few days; virtually no one evacuated.

I first became aware that the threat was serious when I woke up on Monday morning to a picture of flooding at the Hoboken train station. Reports came in through the morning of high levels of water first lapping at the Hoboken waterfront and then flooding Sinatra Drive. The highest point in Hoboken, Castle Point, never floods -- until today. Heavy wind took down trees around City Hall and led to the explosion of a power station that plunged half of Hoboken into darkness. In anticipation of losing power, I established a text message group to stay in contact with local parents. The reports trickling in became increasingly dire as the storm surge moved west. Car alarms and explosions have punctuated the night.

In Virginia, empty shelves at stores

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va.?At noon, I took it upon myself to visit a couple of my friends and go around the city of Herndon to randomly ask how people are dealing with the preparations for the storm.

We went to the shopping mall and asked a woman, Janice, what she thinks. She said she's glad for the storm because it finally gives her a break from all the boring election news coverage on TV.

Brad Dansky, 22, said he "scored bananas and an LED flashlight at the 7-11. Woohoo."

Janette, 51, said she's taking bets with all her friends on how many leaks she'll find in the ceilings of her house this week and that she's going to brunch like there's no tomorrow.

Wendy Shaw, 34, says her plan of attack for the hurricane is to "get a few party boxes of tacos and call it a day."

We were surprised that there were a group of guys playing flag football in their yards. They said, "Sandy? BRING IT ON!!"

Hurricane Sandy flexes her power on Long Island

LONG ISLAND?Just past noon, I went out to take a few pictures expecting to do a before and after. Sandy had other plans, though. The water had already come inland in several places blocking roads and causing evacuations. Trees and telephone poles were down before 2 p.m.. Here are a few of the pictures I took today. The storm still hasn't really hit us here yet. I shudder to think the kind of damage we are about to experience.

? Edward J. Neary

4:10 p.m.

Power still on in Far Rockaway in Queens

QUEENS?Folks around town crowded the local grocery store, Food Dynasty, and purchased huge amounts of food. I was one of them. While some people left Far Rockaway, others in the houses near me and the apartment building I live in stayed. For a while, things seemed calmed. The wind picked up, then died down.

By late this morning, the wind hit the building pretty hard and I could hear the wind's blasts. While there has been rain, my apartment in Far Rockaway has not experienced flooding as of 2:10 p.m.

At times, though, the whole building seems to shake. Power has not been affected. One lone man left the building during the storm. I wasn't sure who he was or why he was leaving the building in the middle of the storm on his bicycle. I just sat in my room, waiting for the storm to blow over, thankful I still had power.

? Justin Samuels

Wind gusts increasing in Morris County, New Jersey

DENVILLE, N.J.?Hurricane Sandy is a monster to be sure. My family and I have tied down everything we can outside. We have a make-shift camp in our basement for fear of downed tree limbs. We are as ready as we can be for power outages. We sit and wait for Sandy's approaching wrath.

Gusts have already started that will reach upward of 60 to 70 mph by this evening. The trees swaying in the back are a fearful reminder of the damage that this storm can bring to us in northern New Jersey. While we do not have the ocean to contend with, we do have many rivers and large trees that can damage our homes.

? Gioia Degenaars

3:59 p.m.

Sandy already bringing down tree limbs in New York

BROOKLYN?As the storm approaches New York City, residents are preparing to hunker down for the immediate future. As of 2 p.m. on Monday in Crown Heights (in central Brooklyn) the storm gusts are increasing and the streets are pretty much empty.

Trees are starting to go down and branches litter the street. The winds are not very high, but as they increase, the damage will be much greater. With expected gusts up to 75 mph and with trees already going down with gusts of around 35 mph, this has the potential to be damaging as the buildings start creating a wind-tunnel effect.

Transportation has ground to a halt and the schools are closed. As a transplant from the South, weathering a storm of this magnitude in the Northeast is a bit odd. As the flooding in areas in NYC increases, watching the news turns those of us not in the evacuation zones into outsiders looking in, as well.

? Melissa Walker

3:42 p.m.

A stormy wedding, thanks to Hurricane Sandy

QUEENS?My wedding is in four days. And while most of the preparations are ready, there are a few things that went wrong and need to be handled last-minute.

Last night, I was visiting my fiance's relatives in Massapequa. An hour after we got back to my mom's house in Elmont, we found out that they had to evacuate their home. His cousins in Long Beach were supposed to evacuate as well since they live right by the water, but they decided to stay home. They've since put up pictures on Facebook of the deluge outside their front steps as well as a snapshot of a reporter from ABC News coming over to interview them.

When I first heard about the magnitude of the storm, one of my first thoughts was, Oh no, I never got wedding insurance. And I sure as heck won't be able to get it now. When I was on the fence about purchasing wedding insurance, I thought that it ultimately wouldn't come in handy because the only disaster I could think of was a snowstorm, and those don't happen in this part of New York in November.

? Tricia Bangit

2:46 p.m.

On Upper East Side, Sandy is bad, but not horrible yet

MANHATTAN?Power remains on, the streets still have people and cars and, except for the pending arrival of the really bad weather, it seems like any other day.

Reports from friends and co-workers from the Jersey shore to Long Island say that the ocean is really kicking up and flooding has been anywhere from moderate to very bad. A friend reports that water was coming up to Ocean Avenue in Belmar, N.J., and another friend who decided to stay in her apartment in Battery Park is reporting water on the rise.

Do not be fooled, the worst is yet to come! Rain, wind and flooding will all increasingly worse as the day progresses. Stay inside or head to a shelter.

Blustering hollers of wind in New York

QUEENS?Earlier, I tweeted, "Hurricanes are always such teases. It's 2012. Bring on a real apocalypse already." Perhaps that was a bit arrogant, and I'll fully understand the irony should this hurricane murder me. However, I'm confident that it will sweep over with little impact on my life.

Outside, its effects are definitely being felt. The closure of the MTA for any given amount of time surely impacts business and industry substantially. I'm curious what operations may still be up and running during this windy mess. I've occasionally looked outside to see the trees moving back and forth from the gusts. The streets are mostly empty. I've seen no people today, but did see a single car driving around earlier.

I'm doing what I should do to stay safe: absolutely nothing. The real danger, if there is any, would be outside. So, I'm staying inside, and you should probably do the same. There are mandatory evacuations apparently happening in the major flood zones. I happen to be in a groove surrounded by Zone C, the least likely to flood. So, even if Zone A is in danger, my apartment building should be fine.

Expecting Hurricane Sandy floods in Denville and Rockaway, N.J.

DENVILLE, N.J.?This year we are ready. We've sand-bagged. We've moved things out of the way of water. We've lowered lakes and boarded up. Yet, something about Hurricane Sandy fills us with a dread that most of us in New Jersey cannot shake. This picture is a scene from the Broadway area of Denville on Sunday afternoon.

Residents of Denville and Rockaway are expecting the Rockaway River to spill over its banks and cause massive flooding just one year after Hurricane Irene nearly wiped out the main street.

Hurricane Sandy takes aim at northeastern Pennsylvania

MILFORD, Pa.?As of 10 a.m. on Monday morning, the track of Hurricane Sandy puts it just a few short hours away from here in northeastern Pennsylvania.

But already the winds are picking up in Pike County.

It is anticipated to make landfall along the Delaware coast, just south of Philadelphia. By the time the eye reaches inland, the winds are expected to cause it to be downgraded to a tropical storm. But by then, the damage for areas such as Pike County will have been done. Traditionally in this area, the rain will loosen the ground beneath trees and power poles. The high winds then rip these from the ground. In the past power has been off for days and weeks at a time. With the predictions calling for this storm to be worse than Irene of just two years ago, residents are gearing up for the worst: They're buying up water and staple foods at our local Wal-Mart, Kmart and other grocery stores. Even convenience stores like the Turkey Hill in Milford are feeling the panic.

Seniors seek state success ? Sports ?

TUNNEL HILL ? Northwest Whitfield softball players Karlie Henson and Emily Boyd began this season with every intention of being at the state tournament in Columbus this week to close their senior year on the diamond.

Mykeah Johnson, the other member of the team?s Class of 2013, started this season just happy to be alive.

The Lady Bruins, the top-ranked team in the GaPrepCountry.com Class 4A coaches poll ? as they have been for most of the season ? will begin their quest for an elusive state title by taking on Macon?s Rutland at 4:15 p.m. today. The final eight teams in each of the state?s six classifications are competing in the three-day tournament at the South Commons Softball Complex in Columbus to determine state champions.

Boyd, who has committed to play at Ole Miss, has been one of the state?s most dominant pitchers in her four years with the Lady Bruins, earning all-region and all-state recognition in addition to being selected as The Daily Citizen?s All-Area Softball Player of the Year each of the past three seasons. Henson, a second baseman, has been a team player as a reliable cog in the middle of the defense and the middle of the batting order.

Along with Johnson, a third baseman, they have started for Northwest since they were freshmen, and this is their third trip to Columbus. The Lady Bruins took third at state in 2009 and finished fourth last season; the only time Northwest failed to advance to Columbus during the trio?s time in Tunnel Hill was after a second-round exit at the hands of Madison County during their sophomore year.

All along this season, the Lady Bruins have talked about focusing on the present, whether it was beating the next opponent or winning the Region 7-4A tournament ? which they did for the third time in four years. However, there really has been only one goal for this team and this group of upperclassmen.

They want a state title.

?I don?t think any of us will be satisfied with this year unless we get a ring,? Henson said. ?Our 10th-grade year, when we didn?t make it to Columbus, we were all devastated ... That has really been a big fuel for us this year, is wanting to prove that we are the best.?

Boyd echoed that sentiment.

?Of course we are going to take it game-by-game like we have all year long, but if winning state wasn?t the only goal for this team, then I don?t know what team it would be for,? Boyd said. ?We need to play for ourselves and our school and our community. (A state title) should be our goal.?

But for all of the dreams of a state title, Johnson had to wonder if her dreams were over after a horrific automobile crash in May. Johnson, the team?s defensive linchpin at the hot corner, could easily be considered the team?s heart and soul.

She?s loud, she?s comedic and she makes few mistakes at perhaps the most crucial defensive position in fastpitch softball. In April, she committed to play at East Tennessee State University, and during the past four seasons her personality has been backed up by a game that is even louder. Like Boyd, Johnson earned Class 4A all-state first-team recognition a year ago, when she was Region 7-4A?s Co-Player of the Year with teammate Bayli Cruse.

But driving north on Interstate 75 late one night a month after making that commitment to ETSU, she almost lost it all.

?It happened on May 5,? Johnson said, losing a little of the bravado in her voice as the moment seemingly washed over her mind. ?It was really bad. It is a miracle I am even alive, much less still playing softball.

?This is the first time I have really talked about it. My teammates know, but I really haven?t told anyone about that night.?

Heading back home to Whitfield County, Johnson had just passed Exit 293 when another car veered into her lane and pushed her off the road. Johnson?s car hit a guard rail on the side of the road, and its galvanized aluminum sliced through the vehicle, cutting her car in half and doing almost the same to Johnson?s right arm.

?It cut my arm in half, basically,? she said.

The accident tore her tricep in her throwing arm in half. When she got to the hospital, she had a tear in her lung and another in her liver. But because no major nerve damage was done in the muscle tear, doctors were able to repair the damage and restore her arm functions.

But it has been a long process.

?I am not the same,? Johnson said. ?I had to come back and reset myself.?

For a softball player, the high school season is played for school pride and the quest for a championship with your teammates, but the real work toward a college career is done in the summer, when select teams travel to play tournaments against elite players around the country. Johnson?s summer involved sitting with her arm in a V-shaped sling, leaving her looking like Rodin?s sculpture, ?The Thinker.?

She wasn?t cleared to get back on the field until a week before the high school season began, and not surprisingly has struggled at the plate at times.

As a junior, Johnson was named to The Daily Citizen All-Area Softball Team for the third straight year, hitting .544 with 20 doubles, four home runs, 23 runs scored and 36 RBIs. This season, she is hitting less than .300.

?Mykeah hasn?t had her best year, but she has had some big hits and is sort of our emotional leader,? said Northwest coach Jason Brooker, who is in his first year leading the Lady Bruins. ?She had that wreck and she doesn?t want to use that as an excuse, but she is finally getting back to her old self at the right time for us.?

Johnson is less concerned about herself than her team, though. And she knows she can help write the perfect ending to her senior season?s story in Columbus.

?My arm doesn?t bother me, but not playing this summer tells a lot of the story,? Johnson said. ?I?ve had struggles, but if I can?t do it, I know that my team is there to pick me up. If I can?t get the hit, I can play good defense and contribute in other ways.

?So this is my comeback. I was expecting to do better, but as long as my team picks me up, I know that we can do this.?

WH spokesman tries to explain Obama remark about Romney

RICHMOND, Va.?After President Barack Obama reportedly suggested during an interview with Rolling Stone magazine that?Republican challenger Mitt Romney was "a bullshitter," adviser Dan Pfeiffer said his comment points to underlying "trust" issues with Romney.

"What is true is that trust is a very important part of the election," Pfeiffer, who said he had not yet seen the article, told reporters during Obama's campaign swing through Florida, Virginia and Ohio Thursday. "The president is someone who says what he means and does what he says, and Gov. Romney's answers in the debates on domestic issues and foreign policy raise real questions about that."

In a forthcoming article in Rolling Stone, Obama reportedly told author Douglas Brinkley that children can instinctively tell that his opponent is "a bullshitter." Politico published an excerpt Thursday morning.

Since Monday's presidential debate, Obama has made an effort to raise questions about Romney's integrity. Last week he coined the word "Romnesia" to describe what he claims to be Romney's tendency to shift and moderate his positions closer to the election.

Listeners should not be "distracted by the word" but should "focus on the issue," Pfeiffer added. "The president addressed that issue in his stump speech today and he's done it throughout this trip."

Feeling hot, hot, hot: Climate shapes distribution and movement of humans as it does other animals

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? We're not used to thinking of ourselves as animals. But as Jason Samson sees it, climate is as important in shaping the distribution and movement of humans as it is in other animals. The McGill-trained ecologist and fellow researchers have been using modeling techniques similar to those used to define the ecological niche for plant and animal species to explore the correlation between climate patterns and population growth in the contiguous United States between 1900-2000. And what they discovered was a pronounced population shift away from areas within the U.S. with cool and seasonal climates, towards those areas that are warmer and drier year-round, and they found that this was the case even when it meant moving further away from agricultural lands.

By using census data and information about weather patterns (temperature and rainfall) gathered from the nearly 3 000 counties in the U.S. over the course of the century, Samson and his colleagues were able to show the predominant importance of the correlation between climate and demographic growth. Moreover, in the study just published in PLOS ONE, the researchers found that population growth was more correlated with climate than income, urbanization or food production.

The researchers found that the average American today not only lives in a drier environment than they did a century ago, but that they have also experienced a temperature increase of over 1.5? Celsius or 2.7? Fahrenheit over the last century. That represents a six-fold increase compared to the temperature change across the US during the same time period.

More and more Americans now live in the warm southern belt of the country that extends from California to Florida, and includes cities such as San Diego, Austin (the third largest growing city in the nation between 2000-2006) and Tampa. The researchers also point to the fact that demographic growth in these warmer and drier climates within the country, and the trend towards urbanization and agglomeration, has been happening at an accelerating pace over the course of the twentieth century, and is particularly noticeable within the last thirty years.

Although the researchers were able to show such a significant correlation between climate and demographic growth, they caution against thinking of climate as a strong predictive factor in determining population movements. They also caution that this concentration of population in warm, dry areas is likely to have a significant effect on human well-being in these locations due to monetary, and environmental factors (such as growing size and intensity of heat islands, increasing stress on limited water supplies, and the high cost of using air conditioning). And they suggest that policy makers may be well advised to consider this information as they plan for the future given the context of global climate change.

Springsteen presents charity honor to Van Zandt

NEW YORK (AP) ? The night busted open in New York City as Bruce Springsteen and other Rock and Roll Hall of Famers helped Steven Van Zandt celebrate his Big Man of the Year award.

Darlene Love, Elvis Costello and Dion were among the stellar performers Tuesday night at a rollicking benefit for Little Kids Rock, an initiative that rescues music education amid public school budget cuts.

Springsteen had some fun while presenting the award ? gleefully detailing their roommate days and Van Zandt's lack of housekeeping skills.

"What a liar," Van Zandt retorted with a grin.

Amid the musical blowout, Van Zandt and the other stars discussed the arts' role in fueling young minds and shaping character ? tasks accomplished through the thousands of musical instruments and the lessons made possible by Little Kids Rock.

Costello, before going onstage, waxed eloquently on the "mundane and magical" aspects of music, and its transformative effects.

Van Zandt said in an AP interview before the show that children might see a musical career as glamorous and fun ? "and it is."

But it also "requires a lot of work, just like any other craft. ... You need discipline and you need willpower and focus. And ...a lot of hours put into it," he said.

So people might be surprised to know that Van Zandt, while concentrating on a multitude of parallel careers, can go three years without playing a guitar, and then pick it up again in a week or two.

"When you've been playing so long, you don't really forget how to play," he said.

"Well, that's not a good example for the kids, though," he conceded, laughing. "That's just me. ... 'You kids: Don't do what I do ? do what I say.'"

The charity named the award for E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons in 2009, two years before he died.

Clemons' nephew, Jake, who now tours with the E Street Band playing saxophone, lent heartfelt accompaniment to Little Kids Rock musicians from Franklin L. Williams Middle School in Jersey City, N.J.

Singer-guitarist Tom Morello, serving a blistering homage to Van Zandt's old anti-apartheid song, "Sun City," told the crowd how it helped stoke his own activism as a student at Harvard University.

Some bad-boy appeal came when rocker Jesse Malin climbed onto a table of people dining near the stage, singing as he traipsed in sneakers amid stemware on the tablecloth.

Besides working with Bruce Springsteen and E Street, and camping it up in mobster roles ? his most recent on the Netflix show "Lilyhammer" ? Van Zandt works as a record and television producer, radio host, songwriter and arranger, and oversees two satellite channels.

The self-educated music historian is also chairman of the Rock and Roll Forever Foundation, which is developing curriculum for schools. Not bad for a guy who endured his own school days as a self-described "freak," ''misfit" and "outcast."

"That was particular to my generation," he said. Now, being a musician is "acceptable. ... But it wasn't so respectable in the 60s."

In the long run, though, Van Zandt said music saved his life ? and he wants to return the favor. "It's why I support Little Kids Rock."

How Jeremy the college kid got on stage with Obama and Romney

ABC News' Avery Miller reports:

Although most of us try to avoid telemarketers, Jeremy Epstein's sister didn't. She picked up the phone and was asked by a research company if she was a registered voter. She said no, but her older brother was. She handed him the phone.

That's how Epstein found his five minutes of fame.

After confirming he was an undecided voter, the polling company told him he could attend the presidential debate on Tuesday and ask both candidates one question.

Luckily, Epstein, an exercise-science major at Adelphi University, is still taking unsolicited phone calls and that's how ABC News found him. He picked up the phone at home on the first ring.

He remembered being very nervous when the cameras focused on him in the first minutes of the debate. He asked his question to Gov. Mitt Romney and President Obama.

"What can you say to reassure me, but more importantly my parents, that I will be able to sufficiently support myself after I graduate?" he asked.

Romney offered him a job on the spot.

"When you come out in 2014, I presume I'm going to be president," Romney said. "I'm going to make sure you get a job. Thanks, Jeremy. Yeah, you bet."

We asked him if he had other job offers considering how quickly his first one happened.

Epstein paused.

"Other than the one, really, that Mitt Romney offered me 5 minutes into the debate, not really," he said. "You know, I don't want to be viewed as just some person who went on TV in front of 60 million people and asked the two most powerful men for jobs. I asked the question because it's how a lot of people in my position feel - 20 year old students just like me who are actually really nervous about whether or not they will get a job and how they can support themselves."

He spent part of the day revising his resume. The debate experience is going to be the first thing prospective employers read.

"That's probably going to go at the top - actually my entire resume," he said. "I think that instead of including my previous work history, I'm just going to write, 'appeared and asked the first question on 2012 town hall debate.'"

But Epstein isn't expecting to be part of a potential Romney administration. He still considers himself undecided but leans toward one candidate.

"Well, if the election was today, I probably would vote for the president, so I don't know if you would call me undecided," he said. "But it would be a good label to put me under."

ABC News' Jon Karl labeled Epstein as the real winner in the debate on "World News." Does he feel like a winner and has it improved his social life?

"I found out on Twitter last night that I had a lot more cousins than I thought I did and people knew me who ? I had no idea that they knew me," he said. "People are saying that they went to sleep-away with me. I've never been to sleep-away camp. Stuff like that."

He definitely feels like he won the gold.

"Me being able to ask a question of the president and the governor, I think that's why you'd be able to call me the winner of the debate," he said, "because I think that they both kind of used me as a starting point in getting in their arguments."

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Mario Lopez and Khloe Kardashian Odom are officially joining "The X Factor."

After weeks of speculation, Fox announced Tuesday that the "Extra" host and the "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" co-star will indeed host the second season of the talent competition. Lopez and Odom will first appear as hosts during the show's live broadcasts next month, the network said.

"The worst kept secret in Hollywood is out," said "X Factor" creator and judge Simon Cowell in a statement. "Mario and Khloe are our hosts. They will debut on our first live show in November, and I couldn't be happier."

British television personality Steve Jones served as the sole host for the first season of the U.S. edition of the show.

The addition of Lopez and Kardashian is the latest shift for the underperforming singing contest. Britney Spears and Demi Lovato joined Cowell and L.A. Reid on "The X Factor" judging panel at the start of the second season. The pair replaced Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger.

"I'm very excited to be joining 'The X Factor' team," said Lopez, who has also hosted MTV's "America's Best Dance Crew" for the past seven seasons. "I love the show, and I've been a big fan of Simon Cowell and the judges for a long time. Khloe and I have been friends for years, and I know we'll be a great team and have a blast."

The current second season of "X Factor" is earning solid ratings for Fox, but NBC's "The Voice" continues to perform better. Last week, 12.55 million people watched "The Voice," while "X Factor" was seen by 9.71 million, according to the Nielsen Co.

GOP Senator Alleges Libya Cover-up

WASHINGTON -- A senior Republican senator on Sunday accused President Barack Obama's aides of deliberately covering up the details of the Sept. 11 attack in Libya that killed a U.S. ambassador so that voters wouldn't question Obama's handling of the war on terror.

Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, a long-time point man for the Republicans on national security issues, said he believes the administration knew within 24 hours of the assault that it was a coordinated militia attack and was not tied to other anti-U.S. protests across the Middle East. According to Graham, the administration suggested otherwise so voters wouldn't think al-Qaida remained a threat.

"They're trying to sell a narrative, quite frankly, that (the) wars are receding and that al-Qaida has been dismantled," said Graham, a member of the Senate Armed Services Emerging Threats and Capabilities Subcommittee, in an interview on CBS television's "Face the Nation."

"And to admit that our embassy was attacked by al-Qaida operatives ... I think undercuts that narrative," he added.

It was an exceptionally pointed allegation on what has become a major campaign issue. The attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, which killed four Americans including Ambassador Chris Stevens, has raised questions about whether the State Department denied its embassy staff adequate security to save money and why the White House was slow to label the assault a "terrorist attack."

Democrats shrugged off the allegations.

"This conspiracy stuff is kind of ridiculous to be honest with you, and I've been kind of surprised that they've gone to these lengths. But you know that's what they do," said Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland, the top Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which is investigating the incident.

The White House declined Sunday to comment on Graham's allegations. It has said previously that the investigation continues and that officials have relied on information about the attack as it became available.

Five days after the attack, Susan Rice, the US. Ambassador to the United Nations, described the violence as spontaneous and said the administration believed extremists had "hijacked" an anti-U.S. protest over a video ridiculing Islam that was produced in the U.S. Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton also had given credence to the notion that the attack was related to protests.

A CIA memo obtained by The Associated Press cited initial intelligence that supported the assertion. But during last week's congressional hearing on the matter, the State Department said it had never concluded that the consulate attack stemmed from protests, prompting lawmakers to question why the administration used the explanation for more than a week.

Graham said Sunday that he had been told by intelligence officials in Libya that "within 24 hours they communicated up to Washington that this was a terrorist attack." Graham did not specify whether that message was relayed to the White House or the State Department, or if that information was kept within the intelligence community.

"Either they're misleading the American people or incredibly incompetent," Graham said of the Obama administration. "There was no way with anybody looking at all that you could believe five days after the attack it was based on a riot that never occurred."

Obama's senior campaign adviser, David Axelrod, on Sunday refuted allegations that Rice or any other administration official deliberately tried to mislead the American public.

"Anyone would have said what she said, because that's the intelligence we were receiving," Axelrod said.

The Benghazi attack also has raised questions about whether the State Department had provided adequate security to embassy staff. Democrats blame Republicans for cutting more than $300 million in diplomatic security funds worldwide. Republicans say the State Department could have relied on other discretionary spending accounts to cover costs.

Lawmakers on both sides said Sunday that a supplemental spending measure is being considered. Rep. Darrell Issa, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said he is planning to lead a congressional delegation to various hotspots around the world to ask U.S. diplomatic staff what security concerns they have.

Bloomberg News reported Sunday that Ambassador Stevens' father said he believes his son's death is being investigated adequately and that it would be "abhorrent to make this into a campaign issue."

Graham, Cummings and Issa spoke on CBS' "Face the Nation." Axelrod spoke on "Fox News Sunday."

Oil cos ask consumers not to panic over subsidised LPG

Chennai, Oct 15 : The Oil Marketing Companies today said LPG consumers need not panic in the wake of the Centre announcing a cap on subsidized cylinders. State Level Co-ordinator for Oil Industry for Tamil Nadu and Pondy and Executive Director, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Tamil Nadu State Office, V K Jayachandran in a statement here said from April one 2013, LPG consumers could avail six domestic subsidized LPG refill cylinders per fiscal.

There would be no restriction on the number of domestic non-subsidised cylinders that consumers could avail, beyond the six subsidized cylinders to meet their genuine demand. He said consumers were requested to ensure that they possess the Domestic Gas Consumer Card (DGCC) booklet with a serial number and consumer number entered by the distributor. 'If any consumer has lost or misplaced the DGCC booklet or does not have the DGCC booklet or has a DGCC booklet without a Serial Number/consumer number, they must get in touch with their distributor and obtain a new booklet, duly stamped and signed by the distributor, after paying applicable charges', he said. The serial number of the DGCC book must be entered by the distributor in his system.Mr Jayachandran said consumers must produce the DGCC booklet to the delivery boy while receiving the refill cylinder. The delivery boy would in turn enter the details of delivery and sign on the booklet. Consumers must check the entry and sign the DGCC book. They must also sign the copy of the cash memo as acknowledgement of receipt of the refill cylinder and handover the same to the delivery man. The cash memo would indicate the number of subsidised cylinder being delivered against entitlement. He said for Reticulated LPG Consumers (Piped LPG) the number of cylinders to be supplied at subsidised rates to the Housing Society would be limited to the net entitled quantity based on individual consumption but not more than three cylinders of 14.2 kg till March 2013 and not more than six cylinders per annum from April one, 2013. The entitlement would be fixed based on the number of flats occupied at the beginning of the capping year. Consumers using reticulated system would not be allowed to hold individual LPG connections. The housing society having reticulated system should provide to the concerned distributor, the list of residents along with individual POI, POA, KYC and standard declaration in the form of an affidavit that they do not have any domestic LPG connection in the said flat and household duly vetted by the housing society. Mr Jayachandran said the Oil Marketing Companies have also undertaken the Know Your Customer (KYC) exercise in a phased manner starting with the consumers identified as having multiple connections. Consumers were requested to co-operate in completing this exercise quickly so that they were not inconvenienced in future.

He said new connections would be released after receipt of completed KYC forms and multiple connection check by OMCs. "Those who are desirous of availing new LPG connections are also requested to submit the details in the KYC format along with an Identity and Address proof. He said the OMCs have also confirmed sufficient availability of domestic subsidised, domestic non-subsidised, non-domestic exempted and non-domestic commercial LPG cylinders to meet the requirements during the ensuing festive season.

European Union to impose new sanctions to prevent Irans production of nuke weapon

Middle East Star (ANI) Monday 15th October, 2012

The European Union is planning to impose a new round of sanctions on Iran to prevent the country's production of a nuclear weapon, says a report.

Sources close to the matter revealed that the EU members meeting in Luxembourg would rubber stamp a "tough package" of sanctions designed to hit Iran's gas, banking and shipping sectors.

The new measures will include a ban on all dealings between European and Iranian banks above a "relatively low" threshold, the Telegraph reports.

According to the paper, on the eve of the meeting, Guido Westerwelle, Germany's Foreign Minister, set a defiant tone, insisting that Europe must send a "clear signal to Tehran" that it will not tolerate its nuclear armament.

Westerwelle's statement disclosed a resolve among EU member states frustrated by Iran's uranium enrichment programme, which continues in the face of threatened military strikes and tightening economic sanctions. (ANI)

This is What Happens to a Disarmed Populace: WH Smith Bans Shooting Sports Mags for UK Kids Edition

Back in August, we reported on UK Animal Aid?s campaign to make Shooting Times?and? The Field?magazines ?age restricted? material. They argued that images of dead animals (and text about shooting same) are ?damaging not just to wildlife but also to the emotional development of young people.? telegraph.co.uk reports that Britain largest chain of newsagents has caved to the crusade; WH Smith no longer sells the mags to?children under 14. ?The retailer, whose founding family owned a highly prized shoot in Buckinghamshire, says it has introduced an age limit on such magazines as?Shooting Times?because children are not allowed to obtain a firearms certificate until they are 14.? Really? Actually no . . .

Sports enthusiasts point out that this is wrong. There is no minimum age for holding a shotgun licence in Britain, although children below 18 cannot buy or own a gun themselves and under-14s must be supervised by an adult.

They question why the high street chain does not restrict the sale of motoring magazines such as?TopGear?to those old enough to drive.

?It is extraordinary that in WH Smith you can buy a car magazine at any age, despite the age limit of 17 for driving,? said Christopher Graffius, of the British Association for Shooting and Conservation.

?You can also buy numerous war magazines which depict the killing of people, yet WH Smith is concerned about children buying shooting magazines, a legal and an Olympic sport.

Note: this is not a government ban. As a private business, WH Smith is free to sell anyone of any age any magazine they want including pornography. Or not. But the newsagents? move reflects the increasing marginalization of?all?gun rights, now that the UK has banned firearms for personal defense.

Here?s the official reaction from Alastair Balmain,?editor of Shooting Times. Note the use of the word ?thousands?:

?The idea that shooters, no matter what their age, are being subject to an embarrassing ?restricted item? check by staff when they head for the tills is shocking, especially so when you consider that the content of magazines such as ours is specifically geared towards a family audience. I started shotgun shooting when I was 10, air rifles when I was younger. Like so many others, I enjoyed the support of my parents when I was starting to shoot. Thousands like me are outraged by the implication that our sport is worthy of such an arbitrary and ludicrous restriction.?

The jihad against the UK shooting sports, including a forthcoming ban on lead shot, is food for thought for anyone who?d argue that American hunters? rights would remain untouched should other types of gun control find [more] fertile ground in The Land of the Free.

Apple extends 1TB Seagate HDD replacement program to cover additional iMacs

Apple extends 1TB Seagate HDD replacement program to cover additional iMacs

Last year, faulty 1TB Seagate drives living in 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMacs purchased between May and July of 2011 were at the heart of Apple's HDD replacement program. Now, Cupertino has extended the initiative to encompass rigs sold between October 2009 and July 2011. Customers with an affected iMac are eligible to receive a free drive until April 12, 2013 or for three years after their desktop's original purchase date. Curious if your machine contains an afflicted hard drive? Simply visit the source link below and plug in your computer's serial number to find out. If you do need a replacement, an Apple Store or authorized service center will be happy to help -- just remember to back up your drive before parting with it.

Felix Baumgartner and Red Bull Stratos preparing for next record-breaking space jump attempt, watch right here video

Talk about building up the tension! Yep, our favorite Austrian daredevil is back out on the New Mexico desert, hoping the weather will hold, and he can finally fall into the record books. Don't forget, you can catch up on Felix Baumgartner's long journey to Roswell in our project overview, but if you're just here for the jump, no problem, as you can watch right here too. Currently conditions are looking like they might just go in Baumgartner's favor, despite some initial concerns about wind levels. But, as we found out earlier in the week, anything can change in an instant. Hold on to your hat (and your breakfast), and hop past the break to watch the events unfold live.

(AP) ? At every turn of Endeavour's stop-and-go commute through urban streets, a constellation of spectators trailed along as the space shuttle ploddingly nosed past stores, schools, churches and front yards.

Having escaped out of Earth's atmosphere two dozen times, Endeavour's slow-speed trek Saturday to its retirement center took it through the working class streets of southern Los Angeles.

In an instant, the shuttle crossings became part of history.

Along the 12-mile course, people marveled at the engineering. Some rooted for Endeavour when it appeared it might clip a lightpost. Others wondered if it could just hurry up to its destination.

Crowds gathered in front of lnglewood High School before sunrise Saturday to watch Endeavour roll by at about 2 mph. Many were bundled up sipping coffee.

Dean Martinez, who lives in Los Angeles but works in Inglewood, came with his wife and 9-year-old daughter.

"This is great for the city as a whole. It makes us proud," said Martinez, a project director for a nonprofit whose family took turns taking pictures of one another as the shuttle slowly inched by.

Added his wife, Marcia, "It's a big deal especially for this neighborhood. It's important to witness history and for our children to experience it."

Endeavour was scheduled to inch into the California Science Center late Saturday to spend the rest of its years as a museum piece.

Before it did, the shuttle made a late-morning pit stop at the Forum, where it was greeted in the arena's parking lot by a throng of cheering spectators. After crawling up Crenshaw Boulevard, the shuttle was scheduled to stop for a bit at the intersection with Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. A celebration was planned, including speeches by politicians and a dance performance choreographed by Debbie Allen.

Endeavour hit the pavement before dawn Friday, trundling out of the Los Angeles International Airport on a remote-controlled 160-wheel carrier past diamond-shaped "Shuttle Xing" signs. The first day of the move was punctuated by long idle spells as crews reconfigured the carrier and leapfrogged ahead on the route to hoist power lines and dismantle traffic lights and street signs.

The pace picked up Friday night when the five-story-tall shuttle was towed over a freeway overpass by a truck (The mated shuttle and carrier were too heavy for that section.) Next to the freeway, Randy's Donuts roadside sign, featured in movies such as "Iron Man 2," landed another cameo as a shuttle backdrop.

There were bumps in the road. Several hundred Inglewood residents suffered hours-long outages when power lines were temporarily snipped. Some businesses lost customers because of street and sidewalk closures.

For most of the way, Endeavour straddled wide boulevards ? Manchester, Crenshaw, Martin Luther King Jr. The one exception was when the shuttle poked through a slightly curved residential street lined with apartment buildings on both sides. It was such a squeeze that its 78-foot wingspan towered over driveways.

John Wilkes, 69, a longtime Inglewood resident, woke up five hours earlier than usual to stake out a spot.

"This is definitely a treat," said Wilkes, who is retired from the airline industry. "But what would be a better treat is to be able to take a ride on the shuttle."

As it wound through South Los Angeles, residents welcomed its presence. Before the move, some lamented over the loss of shade as trees were chopped down to provide clearance.

When Endeavour rolls down King Boulevard, special attention will be paid to the pine trees planted in honor of the slain civil rights leader.

Endeavour may have circled the globe nearly 4,700 times, but its roots are grounded in California. Its main engines were fabricated in the San Fernando Valley. The heat tiles were invented in Silicon Valley. Its "fly-by-wire" technology was developed in the Los Angeles suburb of Downey.

It's no longer shiny and sleek like when it first rolled off the assembly line in the Mojave Desert in 1991 to replace the lost Challenger. As it cruised block-by-block, it's hard to miss what 123 million miles in space and two dozen re-entries can do to the exterior.

"You can sense the magnitude of where it's been," said Janet Dion, a family therapist from Manhattan Beach, fixating on the heat tiles that protected the shuttle during the return to Earth.

Shuffling Endeavour through city streets was a laborious undertaking ? nearly a year in the making. It could not be taken apart without damaging the delicate tiles. Airlifting it was out of the question. So was driving on freeways since it was too massive to fit through underpasses.

"This is unlike anything we've ever moved before," said Jim Hennessy, a spokesman for Sarens, the contract mover.

Once movers settled on the route, the neighborhoods with a front-row seat were transformed. Some 400 trees were cleared with the promise of replanting later. Telephone, cable and power lines were lifted sky-high. Chunks of steel plates were laid down to prevent the streets from buckling and to protect underground utilities.

It'll take days or weeks before a sense of normalcy is restored. In the case of the trees, it'll be years before the newly planted grow to adult height.

Such a move is not cheap. The cross-town transport was estimated at $10 million, to be paid for by the science center and private donations.

Endeavour's transport followed other shuttle moves. Earlier this year, Discovery taxied to the Smithsonian's annex hangar in Virginia. The prototype Enterprise was pulled by barge to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York City.

Next month, Atlantis, which remained at its Cape Canaveral, Fla., home base, will be towed short distance to the Kennedy Space Center visitor's lobby.
